The Catcher in the Rye
existingstorm:
I read this today. I would love it if someone told me the point of this book; or perhaps why people would study it? I feel like I have gained nothing.
Its the book that finally gave a voice to cynicism - and the unforgettable and oft repeated passage of a man hiring a prostitute just to talk. Its a book about why people are discontent.
T: What should a good friend do?
M: Promise less. And do more.

I’m sorry minister of Anglican Church, but through that momentary slip-up, you reveal the face of Anglicanism (and western Christianity).
Dumb # 4
Not everything is about you, she constantly reminds me. She had settled on talking in that presumptuous tone that modulates opinions and complaints. Even though she comes late, leaves early and is dissatisfied when I don’t give her attention, its surprising how comfortable she is to be this way. One of the many injustices the world is willing to pardon when committed by people who ooze with...
Dumb # 3
If I wasn’t conscious of the vital role that reciprocation plays in mathematics, perhaps I would be more accepting of how things played out. I guess T could actually have just “moved on”, A could be telling the truth when she says she’s ”making priorities”, and AA could’ve really been ”busy with life”. Birds relocate their nests, don’t...

Dumb #1
I hadn’t cried for a solid four years. Yet, it took all but a slight altercation to collapse in an uncontrollable sob. The muffling pillow only made it worse. I was 19. And I felt dumb again.
Dumbness, or feeling dumb has a long history with me. I remember the taunts of Anna Gardner, age 6, who persisted to make life a scholastic hell in Kindergarten - “you’re only 5 - no wonder...

Its a funny business, Jerry. In no time at all your whole life becomes this..this..farce where you honestly begin to think that your pirouettes are the sole reason the world keeps spinning on its axis…seriously. Jane, well she was a fine example but she was brilliant tonight, Jerry. O my you should have seen her, so beautifully held together, and she..was so ….white!? It was...
“I walk through the Christmas city lights, not a taxi in sight and the town going crazy all around me, and I think how kissing is such an extravagance of nature. Like birdsong; heartfelt and lovely beyond any possible usefulness.”
–Anne Enright, “The Forgotten Waltz”
Barren coolness
I remember a boy, no more than 17, thinking “catching up for coffee in a cafe is what old people do.” In his world of online gaming, cheap fast food before school and late-night expeditions as a red P-plater, coffee drinking seemed something of a pretentious, refined and plainly, utterly “senior” way to spend money and time. But today, walking intoa new cafe that has just...
Bright Eyed Freedom
Oberst took the stage alone, wearing a powder-blue tuxedo, strapped on an acoustic, and crooned a couple of lengthy solo numbers. He was the real deal, a boy genius and thus the more insufferable. His Tortured Soulful Artist shtick, his self indulgence in pushing songs past their natural limits of endurance, his artful crimes against pop convention: he was performing sincerity, and when the...
Ex Boyfriends
Ex-Boyfriends
They hang around, hitting on your friends or else you never hear from them again. They call when they’re drunk, or finally get sober,
they’re passing through town and want dinner, they take your hand across the table, kiss you when you come back from the bathroom. They were your loves, your victims, your good dogs or bad boys, and they’re over you now. one writes a book in which a...

Planet Q, Population 1
Its late Tuesday afternoon at the time of year that sparks the sort of conversation which perhaps should have taken place a few months earlier. Standing around in the car park, contemplating things way too big for the angle of the sun and my own levels of self-deprecation to allow, she asks are you happy. I just see you don’t want to be here. Its now become a mere formality to answer her...
Summertime Clothes
Sweet summer night and I’m stripped to my sheets Forehead is leaking, my AC squeaks and A voice from the clock says, “You’re not gonna get tired” My bed is a pool and the walls are on fire Soak my head in the sink for a while Chills on my neck and it makes me smile but My bones have to move and my skin’s gotta breathe You pick up the phone and I’m so relieved...
it was you
It was you, the God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who pulled me through the quagmire of 2011. It was you, not only in presence, not only as an advocate, but also as my deliverer. You delivered me from evil to prepare me as worthy in Christ Jesus to receive an eternal glory waiting for me.
I now believe that there is no trouble or calamity in heaven and earth, worth comparing to the weight of hope...

Another's future, another's happiness
As time draws to year’s end, we become redolent with contemplations so rancid, that their demure seems almost insulting. But having this morning off from my regular work, I came across a passage written with such an entire and wholly optimistic attitude towards someone else, I felt I needed to share it.
“There’s a nice life, I thought. Skill and patience and a beautiful thing coming into...
