I was there When you, probably for the first time in your life, admitted what later ensnared you. You said, I don’t want to be a suburban mum, And the thought of being trapped in some domestic setting was as ridden of life as the word “domesticated” itself. It was late in the night, perhaps late enough to talk the way you did. I’ll never forget you nodding along in quiet...

I tried a biscuit. He threw it to the ground. Would you like more water? More juice? No? He stamped a terrible noise And made a tremendous fuss. All this noise. This mess. A drove coming through, both of us. Marching to the bedroom. He rolls onto the matress like he’s diving into a cake. I shut the door and hide in the sheets. I find him. For all our differences, We are but two boys. Who...

Love Poem
wwnorton: I want to write you a love poem as headlong as our creek after thaw when we stand on its dangerous banks and watch it carry with it every twig every dry leaf and branch in its path every scruple when we see it so swollen with runoff that even as we watch we must grab each other and step back we must grab each other or get our shoes soaked we must grab each other  Linda Pastan, from...

The New Intelligence
I do a poor job drying myself, but within minutes of clambering free from the shower I have my tie, shirt and pants already selected. Its a mystery that amongst the bundle of crumpled workwear, all knotted and exhausted from a deathmatch with the dryer, I spot a colour code that instantly works for me. After getting dressed, I load up my computer without needing reminder that the desktop has run...

“In a real sense, the issues she wants to raise are secondary to the process.” It’s a nervous wait. Still unsure what all of this is about - a performance review, perhaps? This early in the year? This late in the evening? Maybe the meeting needs to be had in the dark, as if to keep with the theme of being kept in it. I was. I at least knew that my boss would be there. And my...

I should have ran faster.
Amazing! Ooooo Wow! He could not wait to tell her what he had seen. He thought about when he could see her next as he took a few steps down, and then he realised, as a slow pain went through him, that she was dead. This made him understand, more than ever, that he could not face her not being around.

“She wanted badly to please him, to say something like It was a turning point; everything feels different now, or I called Lizzie and we made up finally, or I’ve picked up the harp again, or just I’m changing I’m changing I’m changing: I’ve changed! Redemption, transformation—God how she wanted these things. Every day, every minute. Didn’t everyone?” — A Visit From the Goon Squad

There’s a sure thin line between thinking about somebody and thinking about how not to think about it. I don’t have the patience, nor the self-control to walk it. Yet I still manage to, for hours - days, if I have to.

Pure words
As a Christian, I aspire to be a reader and lover of the Bible. In today’s intellectual climate, even in the climate of my present company, very few people believe the Bible. While excerpts and allusions from the Bible feature in almost every course reader at university, people seldom turn to the Bible for answers to life’s pressing issues. However, its my contention that...

Stereotyping quasifriendships the logocentric friend: the friend who keeps a light year’s distance from you in person, but is prepared to lay their bare soul before you, in discrete bundles of sms, fb msgs and other social media the Samuel Beckett friend: the friend who menaces your emotional ticker by saying nothing and waiting for you to go first. the chopping block friend: the friend...

The skylight - probably the most lyrical feature of our built environment. A moment spent gazing through it and you have probably acted out every cliche of hope and despair to ever appear in the last 50 years of modern fiction. The following ingredients are key. looking upwards looking through looking beyond blue sky passing clouds trapped indoors light A PhD thesis right there

– Caroline Polachek of Chairlift, interviewed by Pitchfork’s Larry Fitzmaurice. I’m glad she said this. I think more people need to talk about this, to call it out, because I think there’s this assumption that the indie world is full of nice guys who have evolved beyond sexism, which is anything but...

Finished The Marriage Plot
“And yet sometimes she worried about what those musty old books were doing to her. Some people majored in English to prepare for law school. Others became journalists. The smartest guy in the honors program, Adam Vogel, a child of academics, was planning on getting a Ph.D. and becoming an academic himself. That left a large contingent of people majoring in English by default. Because they...

Understated
I see you in my dreams Sometimes, there’s a green hill and I see you coming just over the peak. The frizz of your summer locks - a delightful little mess swaying just above your collar and brushing a feathery shadow across your face. I see the peak again, and its always you breaching its outline, growing larger with that toothy smile you never really learnt how to contain. If you’re...

The Catcher in the Rye
existingstorm: I read this today. I would love it if someone told me the point of this book; or perhaps why people would study it? I feel like I have gained nothing. Its the book that finally gave a voice to cynicism - and the unforgettable and oft repeated passage of a man hiring a prostitute just to talk. Its a book about why people are discontent.
